The series

Short films that make mechanisms clear.

Each series follows one structure of the cell from first principles to disease. Films run about a minute, with sources on the final frame.

Our approach

Studio quality, at stock-media prices.

Specialist studios charge thousands of dollars for a minute of custom biomedical animation. We are building a library of high-quality 2D and 3D films that cost about as much as a stock clip, so lecturers, clinicians, publishers and students can use them.

Our founder, Professor Peter K. Smith, is a practising clinician who has made multimedia for medical education since 1993 and has produced more than 1,000 animation projects. That experience now guides every film in the library.

At present

We are not taking commissions while the library grows. To use a film in your teaching, talk or publication, get in touch.

Answerable to the science

Every claim is checked against the primary literature before a frame is made. References appear on screen.

2D and 3D

Molecules, organelles and tissues in depth, with clean 2D diagrams where they explain more.

Released weekly

The library grows every week, series by series, from the mitochondrion outward.

Virgil Scientific is the scientific animation studio of Virgil Studios. The laurel is the oldest mark of mastery, worn by poets and scholars, and we hold every film to it.
